How do I measure the amount of electromagnetic energy being produced by an appliance, and how much is unsafe?
The control box for my home security system (which receives RF signals from various sensors in my home, and also transmits a cell phone signal) is located very close to where I sleep at night (approx two feet from my head with a wall in between). I can hear a faint electric "squeal" constantly coming from the box when I stand next to it. With all the recent attention on cell phones and outdoor electric power lines possibly causing cancer, I'd like to know how to measure the emissions from an appliance and determine if the levels are safe. I'm not paranoid, just curious since I will spend approximately one third of my life sleeping next to the box.
There are RF measuring meters for such application.
But, and this is a big BUT, I have seen three cell phones pop popcorn when they are but a few centimeters away and pointing a a kernel of corn. Then they are set off to ring concurrently by calling them. It takes only a few seconds for the first kernel to pop, which is then followed by the rest. Four cell phones will pop the corn even faster and the type or model of the cell phones make no difference in the results. The corn still pops.
My point is this, RF strength from cell phones is strong enough to pop corn. I personally would not want them near my head for any length of time while they are operating.
