Selecting a CCTV system for home?

Im looking to buy a Color CCTV system for my home. 4 cameras, night vision (or IR) capabilites, DVR, etc.
I want something good for the money, but dont want to spend a lot.
One big point that I want to make is that I dont want that choppy video playback (slow FPS) that some stores use (you know the kind where the subject is standing in one spot and the next frame ihe is in another spot).
Please help me understand what I need and give any relevant info I may need.

surveillance security camera and PCI?

I am thinking of getting a security surveillance camera it says it is windows vista compatible it will come with a card that I must insert into the PCI slot where is that. also another that i am looking says that a pc must have a dvr does anyone know if my pc have them things mentioned. I have a 2007 compaq Presario Windows Vista Home Premium? thank you I really just don't know about computers.

ok, if you have a laptop: NO you don't have a PCI slot. if you have a desktop and you look at the back of the computer, and you see there is an empty area covered with a removable piece of metal, yes it can be installed there. The PCI slot is an empty white slot connector on the motherboard, really close to any of the back of the pc.

The DVR part is nothing but software and normally it comes in a disk with the card that you are going to install on the computer.

so the process is, install the software on the disk, then install the card and let windows recognize the card. Then just start your software and you will be working, the only thing is... you might still have some problems because sometimes you still have to follow some instructions to set the cameras up... and that is proprietary of each brand... but don't worry, normally there is some kind of literature in the same disk that you'll be using to install the card.

PTZ (Pan/Tilt/Zoom) style security cameras have been a mainstay of business security camera systems since the days of VCR-based analog systems, and have continued in their popularity into the digital age of security. However, the reasons for the PTZ Cameras, and the benefits have changed over the years. Many business owners might expect too much out of these PTZ Cameras, or might expect the wrong benefits. It is important to know what a PTZ Camera can add to you business security camera system before taking these cameras into serious consideration.

Originally, in the days of VCR based Analog recording from business security cameras, the PTZ Camera was used prevalently as a means to offer coverage of more area, without having to add extra expensive equipment. These PTZ Cameras could be set to pan and tilt, as well as zoom along a pre-determined path continuously, providing coverage of an entire area. This type of PTZ Camera was developed with that purpose in mind, and served its purpose very well in business security camera systems with analog recorders. These analog VCR recorders could only accept a finite number of cameras, and would split resolution across the connected cameras through use of a multiplexer. Adding cameras to these systems would involve addition of expensive multiplexers, additional time-lapse VCR recorders and other equipment, so it was often easier to simply install one PTZ Camera to cover the same area that could otherwise be monitored by 3-4 stationary cameras.

However, with the advent of Digital PC-Based or Standalone DVR recorders that can be used for business security camera systems, the role of a PTZ Camera has shifted significantly. These digital recording systems generally utilize a motion detection recording, to help conserve on recording space, allowing for longer recording times on the recorder's hard drive. However, if a PTZ Camera is set to an Auto-Tour on a digital system, this camera will always be triggering a continuous recording, using up precious hard drive space in the process. With Digital PC-Based or Standalone DVR Recorders, adding extra stationary cameras is not difficult at all, as digital systems can generally be upgraded without major expense, so providing adequate coverage with stationary cameras is usually far less expensive even than installing a single PTZ Camera.

So what is the allure to the PTZ Cameras? The original benefit to analog recorders of covering more area with a single camera has been rendered less than necessary on newer digital recorders. So business owners should determine how they will be using the PTZ Camera to determine if a PTZ Camera is the best solution. PTZ Cameras connected to PC-Based or Standalone DVRs provide the ability to move the camera and zoom in on specific activities while they occur. Unlike VCR based systems, you do not necessarily have to be stationed on-location in order to accomplish this. Many systems, like our Alnet Systems PC-Based DVR Cards, will allow you to move the PTZ cameras and zoom in on what is occurring even from a remote location over the internet. The Alnet Systems PC-Based DVR Card/Software combination will even allow you to control the live PTZ camera from a Laptop, PC, Windows Mobile PDA Phone or even Windows Mobile Smartphone. The ability to move the camera live while on-location or off, allows you to get more relevant video footage of what is occurring. This allows you to leave the PTZ Camera at a pre-determined "guard" position with a wide view of the area, but zoom in on something as it is occurring for better footage of the incident.

You need to keep in mind when installing the PTZ Camera that it will not be able to provide more detail of an occurrence than what was in view and recorded at the time when the activity was occurring. For instance, if your PTZ Camera was set to a wide-angle guard position while someone was breaking into a car in your parking lot, the recorder will only have the footage from the angle that the camera was pointed at during the time of the occurrence. In other words, a digital zoom after the fact will not provide the same quality footage as an optical zoom (controlling the camera during the event). A digital zoom after the fact, will only make the pixels larger on the screen - the further you zoom in, the larger and blockier the pixels become. But with today's digital video recording systems, you can easily monitor your camera right on your PC, while you are working or even while at home, and can control the camera with easy PTZ Controls. This way, as long as you are connected in to your cameras, you can use the optical zoom of your PTZ Camera to zoom in on what is happening in the area covered by your PTZ Cameras.

Therefore PTZ Cameras are still an excellent choice for business security camera installations, because it will allow you to control your camera. This way, you can visually patrol your business or zoom in on things that are occurring at your facility while they are happening, but keep in mind that the camera will be limited to the footage that it is seeing at the time of the activity. So it is a good idea to have a guard position for your camera that will provide a good overall view of the area of your business. This way if something occurs, the camera is not looking in the wrong direction...and if you are watching the camera at the time that something is happening, you will be able to control the camera and zoom in on license plates, people, vehicles and more, to provide even better video footage of what is happening.

How do I transfer a security camera DVR to a computer?

How do I transfer a security camera DVR to a computer?
Its been on my mind for quite some time. I can transfer the recorded video onto a VCR. but I would like to hook it up to the computer so that way I can record it on the computer which then i can easily transfer to dvd if needed for evidence.
I work at a thrift store and we are having a lot of problems caught on camera so i'm having a full time job just transfering it all on a VHS tape. Which is such a pain.
We have several security camera systems in the store.
The DVR we are using is a Clover DIGITAL VIDEO RECORDER

Ghost / dust orbs question?

I purchased a small color security camera with infrared and sound for $ 50.00 from home depot. The security camera uses rca cables that hook up to my tv input channel. I placed the security camera outside my bedroom window so I can see who is visiting my home. However, when viewing my security camera on tv when it's dark outside. I have sometimes noticed orbs, possibly dust orbs, traveling in front of the camera. The orbs usually one or two look like they are going toward my house. I was just wondering if anybody else has noticed this while viewing their infrared security cameras at night.

First, you have to make sure you ARE viewing orbs and not dust particles in the air. This can be determined easily in several ways:

* Set up a night vision camera (infrared) - which you have already done: This can be a bit costly, but if you wanted to nail down some solid proof of anything supernatural, this is the way to go. A night vision camera not only looks cool with its green tinge, but its super sensitive - like an thermo-based camera. Now, I've never known an ordinary thermocamera to pick up orbs - whereas a Night vision cam is known to pick up some weird images... so I can't be too sure you've got orbs on your recordings (sometimes the images will look a little distorted).

* Take photos: This is best done with a digital camera, as they pick up orbs better than normal disposable cameras (or any film photographs), also you are able to delete digital photos - so you're saving money. It doesn't have to be an expensive camera, but make sure it's got good quality lens (eg: Sony Cybershot cameras). When you're taking photographs, and you catch orb-like objects on them - you need to observe a few things.
- Does it glow? Most orbs will appear to have a glow around them.
- Does it show distinctive movement? Real orbs apparently show movement on videos AND on photographs (even if they ARE sequence shots)
- Does it come out of thin air? Most orbs appear to turn up out of no where.
- What shape is it? Orbs are supposed to be round. If your orbs are anything between diamond shaped or oval - then its just dust.
- Is it alone? Orbs are known to show up on their own, without other orb company. If you've got more than 2 orbs - it’s most likely a 'pack' of dust. Also, dust show swishy sort of movement - like with an airflow. Orbs seem to have a mind of their own.
- Is there a temperature change? Some orbs are linked with ghostly activity, and sometimes only appear in the presence of a ghost.

However its important to note that with a photographic camera - you can get oil, water droplets or dust on your lens (or in front of it) . This can cause orb-like objects to appear on your photographs. What happens is: the light or flash on the camera bounces onto the dust (or oil droplet... etc), and the shine causes them to appear perfectly round and glowing.

Catching an orb on an infrared camera is rare, (if it IS a real orb). I'll suggest you watch the following (just click on 'em in order to watch - you'll need Flash Player though) , and note if any of the orbs you have look like the ones on the following footages:

It's almost worth noting, it may be helpful if you can post a small piece of your footage online somwhere for others to see. If one is able to SEE the evidence, then one can conclude.
