well i had a sh** day today, and after school me and my friends decided to to go to a shopping plaza. We were looking in mobile phone shops, and you know those fake dummy phones on the shelf? Dummy Security Cameras are used extensively in small retail stores and businesses. I'll admit it is difficult to find a seasoned professional in the security industry who will recommend fake security cameras as a good response to theft or crime. However they do have their place in the security world, although a modest one at best.

Dummy cameras are regular security camera housings without the electronics inside. They are simply just the shell of a camera this keeps their cost as low as possible and in some situation is the cheapest response to a theft problem. Some dummy cameras go the extra mile and display a red LED light on the front of the housing which is lit bright red or flashes in an attempt to convince a person the camera is real and working. The humorous part about this is real security cameras never have a red flashing LED light indicating it is operating. In fact, it's safe to assume a camera is a fake if it does have a red flashing light on it.

So when are dummy camera a good idea? Dummy cameras can be a low cost effective solution in helping reduce retail theft and shoplifting with a few exceptions. Dummy cameras positioned to view customers and potential shoplifting areas do help in deterring a customer from stealing. But their effect can be time limited by the situation. If you suspect employees are committing the theft, dummy cameras are a bad idea! Sooner or later they will figure out they are fake. Day after day they will watch the camera and wonder where the recording device is. When safe, they will look in the ceiling for wires and sooner or later they will have a quick look at every office and storage area in the facility where a video recorder and monitor could be hidden. While dummy cameras can be a cheap, quick response to a problem, it is important to understand there is possible liability you may unknowingly expose yourself to, if you use dummy cameras in the wrong situation. For example, let say you place a dummy camera in a parking lot to view an area where there has been vandalism. Yes it may deter the vandalism, but you could end up in the poor house. Why? Let's say it's late one night and a young girl has parked in the area of the dummy camera. She sees a few questionable people in the parking lot but because there is a security camera she assumes someone is watching and it should be safe, she heads for the car. By placing the camera in the parking lot you have implied a level of security which is not real and does not exist. If the girl is attacked, robbed or worse you could be found liable and responsible for damages, injury and restitution.

My school has numerous cameras. I know that some of them are fake. But I cannot tell which are and which aren't.
So what are some design or wire differences that can help you tell the difference between a real and dummy dome camera.

If the fakes are well designed, you will not be able to tell. THAT is the WHOLE point. If you know you might be on camera, and if you do something that you should not that it might end up on a video tape, it tends to make you behave. About the best you can do is "blind" the camera with an infrared laser. That is what they do in movie theaters to stop people from making a video of the screen. The theaters use an unfocused laser behind the middle of the screen to illuminate the entire theater so the video cameras see this bright spot in the middle of the picture, but you see nothing since the laser is just below the visible light frequencies. Even though video cameras have an infrared filter that is supposed to take out infrared, the laser they use is so close to being visible that it passes through the filter. Some people might actually see the dim red spot if the screen ever goes to all black. My local supermarket has a huge number of domed cameras spaced roughly 10 feet apart in every direction. I counted one area and figured there are over 100 hanging from the ceiling. I am fairly certain there are NOT that many real cameras. It would not be practical to record over 100 camera feeds. There IS such a thing as too much information. So the question then becomes, where would it make sense to have a camera? For the market, it would make sense to me that the one hanging over each cash register might be real. I would put one over the produce section. Then I would place any others I might have over areas where highly pilferable items are located. Your school would be thinking along the same lines, selecting areas where the mean kids hang out for example. I am wondering why you want to know which cameras are fakes anyway. Are you thinking of doing something you should not? Such as bullying others, maybe???

I do not see the logic in a fake camera. As you said it makes it appear as if you have something worth stealing. Plus if the robber is experianced enough then he will see it as fake and make you the next target. Even if they didnt know it was fake they could just steal/destroy the camera.
